First Week Recap

July 2nd, 2009 Editor 1 comment

We’ve finally done it and have gone live. Right now that’s just a teaser because here is still a lot of content to add for the first topic (14 stories to be exact).

Over the course of the next month, we will be adding a new story from a new writer every day or two. Fridays will mostly be a break day for a recap and breather for all of us, and a chance to go back and look at what has been happening.

Hint: If you want to look at a particular topic and see everyone’s entries for that category, take a look at the menu bar at the top of the page, right now you will see “July 2009….”. At the beginning of every month we will add a new one.

Now here’s your chance to have your say, comment here and let us know what you think so far.

This week has already been informative with a story on censorship in the “Old South Africa” – This Is Not Dallas And There Is No A-Team and another story from Diva detailing a number of issues Becoming South African.

On those topics, I have been doing some research and have found the following links. Firstly, an article from the New York Times in 1990, which I’m sure we didn’t get to see on the censorship issue.

The second is a time-line on the different acts which the governments put in place to further segregate, ending with the repealing of the Population Registry Act in 1991.

Remember, we are not trying to complain here or be negative, but rather learn from everyone’s own past.

Have a good weekend, see you on Monday.

The First Story

June 7th, 2009 Editor 2 comments

After some discussions, brainstorming and input from a few people – we have our first topic.

“When you first realized you were South African”

It’s going to be interesting to see 12+ different ideas on this one. Remember that no one is discussing this between themselves, in fact I am the only one who knows the identity of all the writers.

Stay tuned, be here on July 1st when the first story gets posted and a new one gets added each day after that (you didn’t think you’d get them all in one go did you?)

Please subscribe to the RSS feed now so that you get regular updates.

Welcome – Contact Us

May 31st, 2009 Editor 1 comment

Welcome to the Old Takkies Indaba.

writers@oldtakkiesindaba.com

What will be coming very soon is a collection of stories and viewpoints from South Africa during the 80’s, 90’s and possibly beyond.

Every week a new topic/event during this time will be decided on, either by the readers or by the writers. All submissions will take place at the same time with no collaborating between writers.

We hope that the different eyes on the past will shed some light on where we have all come from, and where we are going.

For this to be successful, we are looking for writers from all walks of life who grew up in South Africa during the 80’s and 90’s. Preferably you will be between 25 and 35 right now. It does not matter if you grew up in Camps Bay in a mansion or in a rural area just making it by, we want your stories.

To become a writer or find out more about this project, please contact writers at oldtakkiesindaba dot com

Regards
