Possible Changes

September 18th, 2009 6 comments

Things have been getting very serious lately, which was bound to happen with our topics and part of the purpose of this project.

But that does make reading tough, day after day, so I am thinking of some possible changes in the next few weeks.

Instead of a different topic each month, I am thinking of mixing topics a little. This could mean a different story each day of the week or a change in topics at the end of every week.

That means that it would take a few months to complete a topic, but there would be some variety and more important, some lightheartedness in between the serious topics.

Let me know what you think, comment below.

Petty Apartheid

August 31st, 2009 196 comments

Petty Apartheid

n.

A system of racial segregation that focuses principally on public places, such as restaurants, hotels, and public transportation.

Petty Apartheid, named by the “regime” for the branch of Apartheid laws that dealt with keeping people separate on a daily basis. These are the laws that kept blacks and whites apart on the beaches, public toilets and disallowed interracial relationships.

From the first drafts and minor edits, I can tell you that this topic is definitely going to cause a lot of frustration, anger and shame but we’ll get through it together and we’ll hopefully get some dialog going that will lead to even more understanding.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming in!

Some Changes

August 12th, 2009 69 comments

I’ve made some changes today to the theme – quite big changes actually but I hope that this will help the flow of the site.

The previous theme lacked a lot of freedom and functionality and I’ hoping that this one solves my problems.

Most noticeably you’ll see some changes to comments with quoting now available and the fact that articles are posted one after another now.

Let me know what you think.

Afrikaans Discussions – #1

August 7th, 2009 6 comments

We’ve had some really good stories and some even better comments.

I can see that we are going to be having some really good debates coming up in the next few weeks as we get even more serious with some future topics – watch this space for announcements.

With the number of writers we currently have, these Friday recaps are going to start disappearing and I will make announcements on an specific page instead so as not to interfere with the “flow” of articles.

I joked around about creating a spreadsheet of Afrikaans lovers and haters this week, but then thought that some kind of survey system might not be so bad. I definitely don’t want to start profiling everyone, but it might show some interesting results.

You might also have noticed this week that I’ve added a new plugin that allows you to rate the articles and comments either by stars or thumbs up/down. What do you think of this? I’m still in two minds about it so I’m going to let your feedback judge whether it stays or not.

Have a good LONG weekend in cold SA – I’ll be at the beach.

August 2009 – Afrikaans

August 2nd, 2009 3 comments

The topic for this month is very simple, yet so very difficult to write about as most of us are finding.

“Afrikaans” – the first/second language for most of us doesn’t have a very good reputation, it’s history marred with not all that many good memories.

But I think the takes you will find this month may surprise you.

And here we go….

We’re Almost Full!

July 23rd, 2009 2 comments

We are nearing the end of the first month!

The response is still good through both facebook and twitter (@OldTakkies), so keep the comments and the suggestions coming our way.

The number of writers is increasing each week, take a look at the writers profile page to see the new ones.

Next week we end of with four, and hopefully a fifth story before starting August with a brand new topic.

Have a good weekend

Mid July Update

July 16th, 2009 4 comments

There are some definite themes coming up in the ten stories that we have seen so far in the past three weeks, some that a lot of people are relating to already.

More and more people are emailing to contribute to the site and you are all welcome to keep doing so. Use the form under the “contact us” page and send me your details. We have two new confirmed writers, I couldn’t ask for a better response.

I’d like to bring to everyones attention the RSS feeds on the site. For those of you that don’t know, this is a way to subscribe to “feeds” and with certain software will allow you be notified when a new article is posted either on the site in general or from a specific writer.

If you are using a browser such as Firefox, you have a built in RSS reader, just click on “Subscribe” on the top menu, or the (RSS) link next to an authors name on the left side bar and it will create a new bookmark for that specific reader.

However, I prefer software such as Sharp Reader that gives you a little more functionality in terms of notifications, organising of feeds, etc..

You can also use it for most blogs that you visit, so just a tip for the day.

Of course, if you use twitter, just follow us on @OldTakkies.

In the next two weeks we will be wrapping up the first topic with some summaries and hopefully some good dialogue.

Keep safe everyone, and glad to have you here.

Second Week Recap

July 10th, 2009 3 comments

The second week is over already. I am very happy with the response and the feedback that everyone has been giving so far.

So far we have shown six points of view on the first topic and already the similarities and more importantly the differences are coming out.

I’m also proud to announce that we have at least one extra writer who found the site and has already decided to contribute. I’d like to finalise our list by the end of this month, so if you are still thinking about it, get a hold of me on the contact page and get started.

In the next few weeks we have some great stories still coming, including some more overseas trips to some very colourful characters from South Africa.

As always, please get a hold of us if you have any ideas or feedback, good or bad.

Have a good weekend.
