Afrikaans Discussions – #1
We’ve had some really good stories and some even better comments.
I can see that we are going to be having some really good debates coming up in the next few weeks as we get even more serious with some future topics – watch this space for announcements.
With the number of writers we currently have, these Friday recaps are going to start disappearing and I will make announcements on an specific page instead so as not to interfere with the “flow” of articles.
I joked around about creating a spreadsheet of Afrikaans lovers and haters this week, but then thought that some kind of survey system might not be so bad. I definitely don’t want to start profiling everyone, but it might show some interesting results.
You might also have noticed this week that I’ve added a new plugin that allows you to rate the articles and comments either by stars or thumbs up/down. What do you think of this? I’m still in two minds about it so I’m going to let your feedback judge whether it stays or not.
Have a good LONG weekend in cold SA – I’ll be at the beach.

Morning Editor,
Nice to see we are moving onto more serious debates and with that comes more of a challenge. Will be interesting to see what everyone has to say as we get down to the real nitty gritty so to speak.
It’s great to see so many writers taking part and here’s hoping more are to follow!
A survey system sounds like a great idea. Would like to see that come into play soon. Especially in time for our next topic.
As for the rating of the articles and comments. It’s a nice idea but i don’t think people are really putting it into practice. So that could be wherein the problem lies.
My long weekend consists of anything but sand, ocean and sea-salt air so breathe it all in for us Saffa’s freezing our asses off in SA.
Perhaps something in the range of a Poll?
I like the article rating system but I don’t think anyone really knows about it. And I think perhaps the question needs to be asked – what is the purpose? If there’s going to be a “highest rated articles” section then that’d be useful for those wanting to “skip to the good stuff” but I can’t see any other use.
Polls and surveys I can see creating more traffic potentially as readership increases. There are a number of other community involvement things that could help with discussion. By the way, is there a tagline I can use for advertising the site?

Also, you appear to be able to rate your own comments

@Rob, I know – and you can’t edit them either
I’m looking at different options for surveys and polls right now – rating system might go away – I don’t want it to be seen as a competition.
I have been using the following in descriptions “Diverse stories from South Africa from multiple writers. A new topic each month being interpreted by each one individually.” – but it’s not really a tag line…
do any of the creative copy-writing types have any good ideas to contribute?
“Old Takkies, New Ideas”
“Leave no sole untouched.”
Or something that’s actually good
I’ll think about it though
I hope you’re SEOing the hell out of this by the way.

SEO is underway, keywords are working nicely and getting some very un-expected search results.
I’m working hard on back links now – that’s the toughest part
