Hmm that was weird, my comment got eaten. Anyway I desired to say that it is nice to know that someone else also mentioned this as I had trouble finding the exact same info elsewhere. This was the very first location that told me the answer. Many thanks.

I'm a great believer in the braai. It is a ceremony around which you can get drunk. It is a forum to discuss the problems of the day. It is a haven of tranquility after a busy week. It is the anticipation of flavour at the end of a long sunday. It is the satisfaction of watching others enjoy themselves. And it appeals to the budding pyromaniac.

Quintessentially South African. Like me.

No chops? No flattie? Just wors and ... veggies?!

I could do with some poitjiekos right now.

But it's true, very few Safficans don't love firing up the 'ol Charka.

@Diva: Had the same experience with my American friend... "So, are you doing it now or what?"

Looking at the photo you'd make many a South African braai'er cry. Vegies? I'm sure they'll contaminate the meat!

Ja nee! So 'n mond verdien jam! I will get some now-now.
;)
I remember having an American visit our department at my old job to give us training on some new software a few years ago. About the fourth day in we were all in the tea room, having our hot drinks and chatting away when he asked us what we meant when we said now-now and just-now... There was a few seconds of confused silence and then we all tried to explain to him (at the same time) that now-now was a shorter period of time than just-now, but that neither had an exact length (of time)...
If we had to list all the uniquely South-African sayings and words we would be busy all day!

I really enjoyed your writing style - it had a Really nice flow to it. Thank you!
